Astronaut ice cream is a very popular thing that you can get at gift shops and museums. It is also available online @ www.AstronautFoods.com. Astronaut ice cream, invented in 1968 and originally intended to be a part of the space program, is very expensive, but I still like it. It is said that astronaut ice cream is really what astronauts ate in space
However, astronaut ice cream did not go into space or do any space travel (especially walk on the moon). The truth is that according to reason.com, "NASA did develop freeze-dried vanilla ice cream for the Apollo 7 mission in 1968" but even some astronauts quoted: "We never got that stuff," said crew member Walter Cunningham, one of the Apollo 7 astronauts. It was in production and was news to the world, but again, is just some gift shop novelty item.
Even though "astronaut" ice cream really isn't really what it says it is, KSC (Kennedy Space Center) calls it a freeze dried ice cream sandwich, it is most likely just because they are trying to show how important in space knowledge they are, since in smaller letters below it says space food. I still enjoy it with my daddy, and always wish I had one in my hand all the time!

Editor's note:
Chris Hadfield makes an interesting point on a broadcast from space where he explains how the crumbly bits often created from "Astronaut Ice Cream" would be bad to have floating around the cabin during weightless orbit! See the video here:
